In 1970, I was a writing major at a college in central Pennsylvania, but I traveled often to New York City to visit my boyfriend, who was attending NYU and lived on East 9th Street just off Avenue A.
I was taking darkroom classes that last year of school, and I traveled with my camera–a little Canonet rangefinder–in tow.
The area depicted in these images is bound on the west by Fifth Avenue, on the north by Union Square, on the south by Washington Square (tidy), and on the east by Avenue A and Tompkins Square Park (not so).
These images are among the film work I began scanning and digitizing in 2018.
